Early on in math, we learned how to count by ones. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, …. And then we learned how to add and subtract. 2+2 is 4 and 3-1 is 2. And then we learned how to multiply and divide. 5 x 2 is 10 and 64 divided by 8 is 8. And then we learned how to find perimeter, the sum of all sides, area, length times width, and volume, length times width times height. And this is good. With this simple math, we can install a fence, price out a carpet for our home, calculate how much it costs to fill a swimming pool, or decipher other strategies to make our lives on earth better.
But what if you want to understand the fullness of the love of Christ? What mathematical equation will help us comprehend God’s infinite love? The answer is found in Ephesians 3:17-19. “that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width, and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
You see, God’s mathematical equation to calculate the infinite love of Christ takes us to a level beyond our textbooks and beyond our physical mathematical formulas. The love of God is so full that it can fill any heart, no matter how wide its sorrow, no matter how long its pain, and no matter how deep its need. But the love of God has one more dimension beyond width, length, and depth. The love of God, given to us by the grace of Jesus Christ on the cross, will lift us up to the eternal heights of heaven by faith.
