Most people who grow up without chickens do not realize that chickens are omnivores. They eat anything and everything they can get in their beaks and down their throats. They even eat nails, rocks, glass, and Styrofoam. They love Styrofoam. I assume that too much Styrofoam is bad for chickens, so we try to keep them away from it, both for the chickens’ sake and for the sake of whatever we were using the Styrofoam for.
Have you ever watched chickens fight over grasshoppers, worms, or meat? It is exciting to watch them grab and run off with a beakful. Their only reservation when it comes to appetite is to be sure nobody else gets their portion. Every chicken wants more. And when you see a chicken that sulks by itself and does not want to eat, you know right away that it is sick.
When it comes to your daily spiritual food from God’s word and your weekly portions at Sunday school, church, Bible study, and other chances to fellowship with others at church, eat like a chicken. Take in God’s word like there’s not enough to go around. And whatever you do, don’t tell your pastor to “Bock, Bock!” Instead, tell him to feed you more of God’s word!
“Your words were found and I ate them. And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart.” Jeremiah 15:16
