People worship today as they always have. They go about doing the things they like to do and the things that are important to them. After all those things are taken care of and their desires satisfied, they get an urge to worship. So, they find something to worship. This is the way it was in Isaiah’s day (about 700 BC).
“Then it shall be for a man to burn, for he will take some of it and warm himself; yes, he kindles it and bakes bread; indeed he makes a god and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it. He burns half of it in the fire; with this half he eats meat; he roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He even warms himself and says, ‘Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire.’ And the rest of it he makes into a god, his carved image. He falls down before it and worships it, prays to it and says, ‘Deliver me, for you are my god!’” Isaiah 44:15-17
This is the way it is today. People have their jobs and their houses and their vehicles and their vacations and their sports and their alcohol and their hunting and their families and their toys and their board meetings and their hobbies and their parties and their social media and their pets and, in case that is not enough, they seem to watch an awful lot of TV. If there is any time left over, they find time to worship. They might think about eternity and life or maybe even attempt a half-hearted prayer to some form of deity.
Let this not be so with us. We have and know a God who is real. God created this earth and everything that exists on it, in it, and around it. God controls the seasons, the storms, and the sun. God directs the nations and economies and gives us our daily bread. God gives us life and life eternal through Jesus Christ. Let’s not worship God with our left-over time as though He were an incapable idol. Let’s worship God first.
