It is remarkable to see how fast a body recovers from a wound.  Imagine you cut your finger.  This is a regular occurrence for most of us and we do not usually stop to think about what is going on inside our bodies while we are looking for a band-aid.  Here is what typically happens.  Within seconds after the cut, blood vessels are constricted to reduce the flow of blood and then the miraculous blood clotting process begins.  First, platelets adhere to damaged blood vessels and clump together.  While this is taking place, clotting factors in the blood are activated and fibrinogen is converted to fibrin, which then makes a mesh-like structure to physically trap more platelets and blood cells to cover the wound.  Not only does the clot stop the loss of blood, it also protects the wound from infection.

After the blood loss is stopped and the wound is covered, the body begins the healing process without delay.  White blood cells gather in the damaged tissue to clean up bacteria, dirt, and dead cells.  Meanwhile, swelling occurs to increase blood flow to the area for rapid healing and inflammation occurs to limit infections.  Within days, new blood vessels are created to correct the flow of blood to the area and within weeks, new flesh is built up on a fibrous network of collagen to form scar tissue.  Little cuts on our fingers heal up and we tend to forget about them as quickly as they heal.  If the wound is big enough, the new scar tissue leaves a mark that will stay for decades.  You might have some scar tissue on your body to remind you of an accident, a stupid decision, a battle, or a surgery.

Although the body is miraculous in its ability to heal and regenerate, there are limits.  Obviously, if your finger, arm, or foot are cut off, they will not grow back, even though they can often be reattached surgically.  And some wounds are so severe that they are fatal.  Here we might think of a tragic car or motorcycle wreck that instantly ended the life of a close relative or friend.  These wounds never heal and are remembered for a long, long time.  And yet, usually within a generation or two, even those fatal wounds are eventually forgotten and replaced by the day to day cares of subsequent generations.

But there is one wound that will NEVER be forgotten.  This is the fatal wound of our Savior, God’s only begotten Son, Jesus.  This wound was brought about by His crucifixion.  Ironically, the reason this wound will never be forgotten is not because of its severity, even though no wound in history can be compared to the death of God Himself.  The reason the wound of Jesus will never be forgotten is because even though it was 100% fatal, Jesus is 100% alive today.  Do you want to be 100% sure you will be alive with Jesus 100 years from now, 1,000 years from now, for all eternity?  Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved for as long as His wound is remembered, forever!
