The Best Days To Fish
As my dad would say, “the worst day fishing is better than the best day at work.” But the best days fishing were when we found the bluegills all gathered together on their spawning beds in the spring. All we had to do was drop the hook in the water over the side of the boat, set the hook, and bring in another fish.
Jesus told His disciples that He would make them “fishers of men.” In that regard, I think it is safe to say that the best places to fish for men would be where the unbelievers abound and are easy to find. That is exactly what America is like today. We are living in post-Christian America. This is a time when more people do not go to church on any given Sunday than do. This is a time when most young adults have never been to Sunday School and really do not care to read Bible stories to their children. This is a time when common Americans no longer miss church on any given Sunday, they simply never go. This is a time when people are no longer ashamed to admit that they do not believe in God. This is a time when everybody has heard of Jesus, but they know as much or as little about Jesus as they do about Buddha or Muhammad.
We who believe on Jesus Christ as our Lord and our God might find post-Christian America a shock. We might lament about the lack of good old Christian values and worry about our changing culture. We might even get frustrated and feel like we are losing a battle. Some even want to quit…
But look again and see where we happen to be! If Jesus called us to be fishers of men, behold, the fish are gathering all around us, just waiting for us to drop in a line! I do not know whether we will ever have our best day at work, but these just might be the best days to fish for men.
“Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19
“Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields,
for they are already white for harvest!” John 4:35
