Beyond Super
There are a lot of things that we call “super” these days…
Superglue…binds to anything, especially skin,
Supersize…comes with extra fries and a giant cup for soda,
Superfoods…healthy stuff like beans, berries, and broccoli,
Supernachos…everything you could possibly want on a corn chip,
Superunleaded…the higher octane rating comes with the higher price,
SuperWalmart…begs the question, “is bigger better?”
Superman…watch out for the kryptonite!
Superlube…oil and wiper change, while you wait,
Superslam…who knew there were 29 big game animals in North America?
Supernova…a local tragedy with worldwide implications,
SuperTuesday…yes, it is another presidential election year,
and of course, the
Superbowl…weeks of hype and 60 short minutes of football.
Looking over our list of “supers”, I must say that there is a trend of disappointment in what man calls “super.” Even at their best, things that are called “super” definitely have room for improvement. In fact, super just isn’t as super as the title implies. With that in mind, as we gather to worship Jesus on the first day of the week, let’s not bring Jesus down to the manmade level of “super.” Let’s worship Jesus for who He is. Jesus is beyond super. Jesus is God – no disappointments and no room for improvement.
“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:1-4
