Everybody knows about gravity.
Even though a toddler can’t say “gravity” and even though they can’t pen or pencil or even crayon a single letter on a piece of paper – but God bless them for trying to on the wall! – they are well aware of the challenges to set their body upright and defy this burdensome and sometimes crashing force.
Even though a preschooler has not yet learned about Sir Isaac Newton’s apple and all of his thoughts thereafter expanding even to the heavenly bodies, every preschooler knows quite well that if they throw a snowball up in the air, it will come down rather quickly upon their friend.
Even though a high schooler may have forgotten the acceleration of gravity for their physics test and even though they would struggle to explain the gravitational principles involved in the new roller coaster at the amusement park 200 miles away, they wouldn’t pass up the chance to go try it out and find a thrill.
Even though dad does not have a PhD in rocket science, he uses gravity every day on the job, whether he is defying gravity to fly an airplane or using gravity to topple a tree in the woods or to stay on the chair at his desk.
Even though mom prefers not to use the word “gravity” in her explanation, she is very adamant that her beloved preschooler, mentioned above, get down off the table before gravity has its way.
Even though I have yet to see a chart relating gravity to biological motility systems in a nursing home, I know many a senior there whose primary wish is to defy gravity, just enough to walk a few steps.
Wherever we are in life. Whatever we are doing in life. Gravity is so common and so reliable that we all know about it and believe in it. In every last thing we do, we silently and intuitively expect it to work, and it always, always, always does!
Imagine how great gravity is. Now imagine the God who made gravity, how much more reliable is God than gravity? Gravity has its limits, God has no limits. And if that is not enough, we don’t have to be content knowing about God, we can know God by believing in His Son, Jesus Christ who came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life.
“Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.” Joshua 21:45
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3
