In A Time Of Crisis, Peace
I remember several years ago when there was a traumatic crisis in our community. After all the sheriff’s deputies and others were gone and morning came, I drove out to the residence, not even sure what had happened. The details were confusing over the phone. As I pulled off the county road and approached the house, the sun was up, there was a slight breeze through the grassy fields, and the meadow larks were singing. The surreal setting was a wonderful and timely reminder to me that regardless of the human frenzy, God is the source of peace.
That was a local crisis. Imagine the scene this past week, in the time of a national crisis. While police officers and first responders put up their yellow ribbons, while news media bantered, while politicians blamed, while social media sites were flooded with truths, half-truths, and lies, and while everyone else hastily repeated the rhetoric … what should we have been doing? Should we have been joining in the frenzy and rushing to make a statement? Maybe we should have taken a drive out into the country to see the sun, feel the breeze, and listen to the meadowlarks.
With or without the drive down the county road, it is not too late to take some time to be alone with God. Remember His peace in this and every time of crisis.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9
