A Shake
The saltshaker is a clever container that is designed to hold salt until it is ready to be applied onto foods through a sieve that is on top. If we were at a meal and asked for salt, somebody would no doubt pass us a saltshaker and expect us to grab it, flip it upside down, and give it a shake.
We, as Christians, are compared to salt. Jesus makes this crystal clear when He says, “you are the salt of the earth” (Matt 5:13). We are called to season the world with the love of Jesus Christ and influence others with His gospel and grace. Like salt, we can be found in containers waiting to be applied. The Christian’s saltshaker is the church. The church is where we Christians gather together to worship God in preaching, teaching, prayer, and song.
Meanwhile, our homes, our community, our nation, and our world are in dire need of God. So, we know, as Christians, what to do. We ask God to send His divine seasoning into our homes, our community, our nation and our world…
How else should God answer our request but by reaching down from Heaven above, lifting up our little church with His almighty hand, flipping us over, and giving us a purposeful shake and then another…until we go.
Don’t get comfortable in your church and plan on settling down with your nice friends in your cozy pews. Go to church and be ready to be sent out the door when God gives a shake.
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Mark 16:15
